Packing for Training

Hotels

What I didn't expect was how many times I would change hotel during training. I stayed in 5 different hotels for totals of 1 week, 1 week, 5 weeks, 3 weeks, and 3 days. I did training in three different cities on different sides of the country.

We received our flight benefits early in the second week, and I managed to travel home for two weekends during training.

Food, Groceries, and Cooking

At my company we were provided with breakfast and transportation to and from training events. All the rooms had microwaves and a refrigerator. They may or may not have had a freezer. Only one hotel had a kitchen furnished with utensils and dishes.

My first month I signed up for walmart plus and got free delivery using the trial month. I subsisted for weeks on foods I could cook in a microwave.

Some items I would recommend having:

Unfortunately, for 10 weeks in a highly social environment, you will probably catch a cold.

A Car

Transportation was provided from the hotel to both airports and training events. It is a common courtesy to tip van drivers usually $1 cash. Before training, you should go to the bank and withdraw $50 in $1 bills.

A few weeks in, my new friends and I rented a car. This made getting groceries and running errands easier. We were in town during a beautiful part of the year and planned outdoor activities on the weekends.

One of the other cities I stayed in, my sim partner lived close enough to drive and so I had access to their car.

We also split plenty of ubers downtown on the weekends.

Training Attire

Office wear for training should be business casual. Business casual can vary between workplace, but at most places you should have a mix of dress shirts, a mix of slacks and chinos, and dress shoes. At the bare minimum, the shirt must have a collar, no jeans, and no tennis shoes. A tie and/or blazer is too formal at most workplaces.

It's hard to build a good business wardrobe all at once if you've never had a job that required it before. I personally buy business clothing from places such as Charles Tyrwhitt, Spier and Mackay, and Bonobos.

The hotels have coin operated laundry. Before heading to training, you should go to the bank and get a couple rolls of quarters. Extra will make you popular. You will need tidepods or a travel bottle of laundry detergent.
